General preparation

This system is designed to provide information from one area of the race course to another. In an ideal situation, each area would have some form of computer connected to the Internet so that they can connect to regattadata.com.

The following areas are provided for: weighins, outdock/Control commission, start line, 500m split, 1000m split, 1500m split, finish line.

Control commission / out dock

The out dock is able to indicate that a crew has passed through, or has boated, and this information will be visible to the start line. Control commission will also be able to check athlete and coxswain weights for accuracy.

Start line

If you are able to have a computer at the start line, the RDS can provide you with information about which crews have passed through Control Commission, and what time that occurred. This might make it possible to see whether you have all of the crews for a race, and whether any late crews might be about to arrive.

It is also possible to time the beginning of a race from the Start line.

Finish line

This is the heart of the timing system. A computer here is used to record the actual times of each crew finishing. I'd also recommend that you print out the finish sheets for each race, as these form the basis of the paper record of your regatta. It can be tricky to record everything that happens, especially in a close race, so it's a good idea to have two or three people at the finish line to watch, record and use the computer as races finish.

Printing information in advance of racing

Before racing begins, print finish line sheets for each race that has entries (i.e. don't print for finals until their heats etc. have run). Go to List races, choose the day or session that you wish to print for, check the box in the Finish line column for every race that shows entries in the Entries column, then scroll to the bottom of the page. Check the box for the ePrinter if required, then click Batch print checked finish sheets to produce a printable PDF. There is also

You should also print copies of the draw for the umpires. There are two versions of the draw. For umpires following races, there is a version with extra space for them to write notes. Go to List races, choose the day or session that you wish to print for, click on the Regatta Day Umpires Draw PDF link at the top of the page for a printable version, or the ePrint umpires draw link to send a copy to the ePrinter (if one is set up).

Printing information during racing

As racing progresses, results sheets should be printed from the finish line to the ePrinter. Keep an eye on which finish line sheets can be printed for finals, and negotiate with the Chief Umpire as to when you will print updated copies of the Umpire Draw for their use.
